Six days earlier, he was injured in a crash during a race in France

A 30-year-old pro cyclist from Colombia has died six days after he was injured in a crash during a race in France.

On Friday, April 24, former UAE Team Emirates rider Cristian Camilo Munoz died following medical complications that occurred after the young athlete was injured while riding for Nu Colombia in the Tour de Jura the previous Saturday, The Athletic, the BBC and Reuters reported.

He was unable to finish the one-day race and was treated by medics after the accident, according to the BBC. Munoz then traveled with his team to Spain to compete in another race, which is where he was hospitalized for a "difficult-to-treat" infection, according to the outlet.

In a statement on social media, Nu Colombia bid their teammate farewell.

“The riders, management, the entire team staff, and Nu Colombia stand with Cristián’s family during this time of profound grief, and extend their condolences to his loved ones, friends, and the entire Colombian cycling community,” the organization, which did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment, said in the translated statement. “We will always remember him for his smile, his generosity, and his sporting spirit.”

The Colombian Cycling Federation also paid tribute to Munoz, attributing his death to “medical complications” following the Tour de Jura race.

“His passing leaves an immense void in Colombian cycling and in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing him and sharing the roads and competitions with him,” the federation said in the translated statement. “Cristian will be remembered for his dedication, discipline, and exceptional character, both on and off the bike.”

The 30-year-old joined the UAE Team Emirates in 2019, and stayed with them for two years. According to the organization, he had been a member of Nu Colombia since the beginning of 2024.

During Munoz’s career, he placed fourth in the 2024 Colombia national championships and secured a stage win following the 2018 Giro Ciclistico d’Italia, according to The Athletic.

The federation offered its condolences to Munoz’s family, teammates and the international cycling community.
