Charlize Theron bonded with her daughter August while rock climbing for her new movie Apex

Theron recently joked about parenting challenges, calling her daughters "hormonal nightmares" on the New Heights podcast

The actress has been open about her decision to adopt her two daughters, inspired by her South African upbringing

Charlize Theron found a new way to bond with her daughter while training for her latest movie.

The actress, 50, spoke with E! News at the premiere of her film Apex on Wednesday, April 22, and shared that her 11-year-old daughter, August, came with her for a lot of the rock climbing training she did alongside professional climber Beth Rodden.

"She's a bit of a daredevil," Theron said of her younger daughter. "Beth and I would be working on one side, and whenever I got tired, I would just look over, and the two of them were just going up these walls."

The mom of two said it was "really good" for her to see that.

"Sometimes, as an adult, you get so caught up in the mechanics of it," said Theron. "And then you just look over and these kids who know nothing, they're just like, 'Gotta get to the top.'"

"And you're like, 'Okay, that's all I have to do. Just get to the top,' " she continued. "It was fun to share that with her."

Earlier this month, Theron joked that her daughters are becoming "hormonal nightmares" while appearing on an episode of the New Heights podcast.

“They just turn into hormonal nightmares," she jokingly told host Jason Kelce when he asked for parenting advice. "Like, I'm getting my ass handed to me from the moment that I walk into the house. And all these things are gonna serve them so well in life, but I might not make it.”

Theron went on to speak about the difference between parenting older and younger kids, saying, “Nature does this beautiful thing where you think you're in your worst place right now, so that you can cope with what you have. But from where I am, I can tell you that you're in a lovely place and they're still lovely and sweet," she said of Jason's young family.

"And then one day, you're gonna walk into their room around eleven, and they're gonna just be like, ‘Why did you turn the lights on?!’” she warned.

The star opened up to PEOPLE in 2018 about her decision to adopt her two daughters and shared that adoption was always a top priority for her. She explained that she was largely inspired by her own upbringing in South Africa, which exposed her to orphanages and children in need in her community at a young age.

"Even when I was in relationships, I was always honest with my partners, that adoption was how my family would look one day," Theron said. "This was definitely not a second option for me. It was always my first."
